Spanish World Heritage Cities – the privilege of historySpanish World Heritage Cities – the privilege of history
Today I am in Bitola, a charming town, I will have a post up soon. I got a great deal on the hotel, regular 35 Euro, I got it for 15 Euro, I am staying two or three nights.Traveling Macedonia is very pleasant, I am surprised that more travelers don't visit this region of the world; the Balkans are truly beautiful. Yet, there is really only one big tourist town that everyone talks about, and that

Friday I arrived to the charming mountain town of Krusevo about 30 kilometers west of Prilep. Krusevo is known for old houses, a famous uprising against the Ottoman Turks, and the home town of the Late Tose Proeski, until his death he was the most popular Macedonian singer of the Balkans. Krusevo's population is around 5500.Kruševo is famous for being one of the first balkan republics and the hig

I decided to visit a small town south of Skopje called Negotino here in Macedonia just east of Prilep on the map. It isn't a place travelers visit; there is only two hotels in town, but in the summer there resides a big pool that people from around the country visit on their holiday. The hotel I am staying at is only 20 Euro, but from the countries I have traveled this hotel would be considered a

The river below the Old Stone Bridge Divides the City of Skopje.I arrived in Macedonia for a rainy and cold introduction. Skopje feels much smaller than Sofia and there are no trams; Sofia could be considered the tram-city. The border of Bulgaria and Macedonia was freezing being so high in the mountains.Rapping everything up worked out perfect in Bulgaria and it was best not to travel with a car.

So I decided to head to Macedonia and continue with the original tentative plan. Originally I was going to travel through Bulgaria to Romania, and back down through Serbia to Macedonia and then up the coast to Bosnia, but decided to stay in Bulgaria for 395 days. Today I am in Skopje, I might head to Kosovo for a quick detour and then back to Skopje and to a couple of places south and cross into

Yesterday morning, the Eternal Tourist (yours truly) took a self-guided walking tour around Southwark which is the little area in which I work.  It is tucked beneath London Bridge and spreads around Borough High Street all the way to Borough Station.  I think it is safe to say that I am rather enamoured with this historic and understated area and I jumped at the chance to take part in

Southbank is one of my favourite places in the whole of London as there is so much to do and see there.  The best thing is that even if you have no money, you can just go and take photos of all of the exhibits and people and that, of course, is free! On Sunday, Stephen and I caught the train to Charing Cross station to meet up with my old friend Gavin.  Gavin and I met at university in

It was our eighth wedding anniversary on Sunday 28 March and we treated ourselves to a first class ride on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (well, it was only a little bit more expensive than the third class tickets!).  Everything about Havenstreet Station was wonderfully authentic. The carriage was marvellous.  We could just imagine the noble folk

The very first impression we had of the Isle of Wight is how beautiful it is!  The sun was shining and it is obvious that spring arrives here earlier as all the daffodils are out already!  We arrived at our bed and breakfast a little early and decided to take a walk down to the nearby cliffs. How beautiful is that?  I knew the minute I saw this little pathway that I had to take

Soon after Mother’s day each year I plant a few chili pepper plants, cilantro and some basil in a small garden area by the garage.  There’s enough pavement between the edibles and the woods to confuse the deer a little, so we generally enjoy at least a partial harvest.  There’s something elementally satisfying in adding [...]

by Per SvangrenOnce a year nearly all the houses in Rute takes bring out all of their unwanted stuff and sell it. This flea market is called Rute Rear Ute. People from all over the island come to Rute and walk around the village to shop for things they didn´t know they needed. Then there are those of us who love selling the things we no longer need and bring in a little coffee money to boot. So e

By Per SvangrenOn the Ferry to Gotland Four days break in Sweden as it is Kristi Himmelsfärd. Thursday was a red day, meaning people are off work and school, then Friday, klämdag, a day between a red day and weekend, so many people take a vacation day from work. And then it is Saturday and Sunday and most people are free from work. So most Swedes have four days for a vacation. For me it means Got
